Summer holidays are all about getting away from the everyday, a change of scenery, a slower pace and time to switch off. At least, that’s the idea.
For parents though, the reality can look a little different. Even the loveliest family holiday still comes with bags to pack, plans to make, meals to think about and children to keep entertained. Sometimes the most relaxing break is the one you take after the family break.
A few weeks into the holidays, keeping everyone entertained, fed and occupied can start to feel like a full-time job in itself. Between work, childcare, days out, playdates and everything else, the summer holidays aren’t always much of a holiday for the adults.
That’s where taking a day, or even a night, for yourself can make all the difference.
There’s something about a spa that forces life to slow down.
At Whittlebury Spa, there’s nowhere you particularly need to be and, more importantly, nobody asking you to do anything. A swim, some time in the Heat and Ice Experiences, a treatment or simply half an hour doing absolutely nothing can feel like a novelty after weeks of family life.
Perhaps that’s the real appeal, it isn’t about filling the day with plans. It’s about having fewer of them.
For those who can stretch the break a little further, an overnight stay brings its own small luxuries.
Dinner without cutting up somebody else’s food. A conversation that isn’t interrupted halfway through. Going to bed without completing the usual evening checklist.
Then there’s the following morning, waking up naturally, taking your time over breakfast and enjoying the fact that, just for once, there’s no rush to get everyone out of the door.
The funny thing is time away from the kids often makes you miss them. A little breathing space can be enough to head home feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy the rest of the summer, even the noise, the mess and the endless requests for snacks.
Because taking a spa break isn’t about escaping the summer holidays.
Sometimes, it’s simply about having a little holiday of your own in the middle of them.
